Basic SEO Overview

There are many disciplines to be learned in Internet Marketing, but somehow I fell in love with the “SEO” discipline.  Not sure yet if this is good or bad. On the one hand, SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is an incredible discipline that when learned and applied consistently and correctly, can do miracles for a website and its ranking, in addition to the possibilities of some great, free traffic.  On the other hand, it, for some reason, does not seem to be always accepted, particularly by those who do not understand it and basically refuse to understand it.  Search Engine Optimizers are looked upon by these people as scammers or people who try to “trick” the search engines.  Though there may be such “SEO Specialists” out there, I believe the majority of SEO marketers are earnestly trying to help the brick and morter businesses of this world make it successfully online.  If people would give it a chance, they would be amazed to see what it could do for their website.

Search Engine Optimization can get quite complex and it is definitely an ongoing function that is vital to any website.  However, my own personal experience has been that just applying the simple basics of SEO can lend such a great start to any website.  When I first learned the basics of SEO, I went back to a couple websites I had already haphazardly put up, applied the basics of SEO by rearranging a few things, redoing titles, descriptions, etc. – you know – pretty easy, basic stuff, and I was truly surprised to see some modest to fantastic results.  Those results are what inspired me to keep going and made me a believer.

You do, however, have to keep in mind that SEO includes assessing your market as well as the keywords you use and the degree of competition for that market and keywords.  There are times when you need to recognize (and this can be learned) when you are in an ultra competitive market and don’t have a fighting chance, despite good SEO.  No one should ever sell you the idea that SEO is total magic to any and all markets, because it cannot be – at least unless you want to put up a really good and long fight.  But, for the most part, there are hundreds and thousands of markets and niches where one can apply SEO for great results.

Knowing where you stand with the competition can be determined by 1) having a review of your website by a competent SEO Specialist or 2) taking a moderate, informative course on the basics of SEO.

As I continue to add material to this site, I am planning on providing information about the best way to get a site review or where to take a course, either home study or in person.
